Barstow Unified School District Plans Upgrades at 10 Sites

According to the Victorville Daily Press, March 5, 2018, Barstow Unified School District has several construction projects underway, including modernizing 10 schools and Phase 2 construction on Barstow Fine Arts Academy. According to the district, the projects will bring schools into a 21st century-learning environment and a second magnet concept school to BUSD. “The majority of the modernization will be infrastructure, utilities, electrical, water, sewage — things that are essential to a school site — drop ceilings, new lighting, energy efficiency — it’s expensive work,” said BUSD Superintendent Jeff Malan. A $39 million general obligation bond approved in 2016 will fund the modernization. A matching $45-50 million state bond will also fund the renovations. The Barstow Fine Arts Academy is on schedule to open in August 2019 with construction in Phase 2 Increment 1 — final grading and utilities currently being installed. The total cost of construction for the Arts Academy is $29 million.
