Route 66 Maybe Key to Downtown Turnaround for Barstow

According to the Victorville Daily Press, June 14, 2015, the city of Barstow is looking at ways to improve downtown and also recognizing the community’s historical aspects to the area, according to City Manager, Curt Mitchell. One of the historical aspects is Route 66. Earlier this year, former Barstow resident and Route 66 enthusiast, Dolores Sedillo, said he shared his ideas with Mitchell and is optimistic to get the ball rolling. Sedillo says he has a plan that will rejuvenate the downtown strip of Main Street, and he’s adamant his plan could be the spark that would boost the local economy. Sedillo intends to “lay the template” that the city of Barstow could present to a developer for the downtown strip. But Sedillo said his plan is not just a Barstow redevelopment project, it would turn Barstow into a “major” tourist destination, he said. “We will be starting the development of a specific plan for the downtown area in the near future, and will seek community input and ideas in advancing a plan that will help revitalize downtown,” Mitchell said.
