Industrial Park a ‘Major Boon’ to Hesperia

According to the Victorville Daily Press, October 7, 2013, a large industrial park is set to be built on the southwest side of town — a move that a city councilman says will be a major boon for Hesperia. The Development Review Committee on Wednesday will discuss a conditional use permit for a 3.5 million-square foot industrial park and tentative parcel map to create 13 parcels on 232 gross acres. The project submitted by Covington Capital LLC is located near Interstate 15 just north of the future Ranchero Interchange. It will sit on the west side of the freeway on Caliente Road, near the Union Pacific Railroad. The proposed development consists of 34 industrial warehouse and office buildings within the Hesperia Commerce Center, which would be built in five phases, according to a city staff report. The permit would allow warehousing and wholesale distribution centers greater than 200,000 square feet, and to subdivide the property into 18 parcels. Permissible land use for the project includes commercial storage facilities, health and fitness clubs, manufacturing, restaurants, vehicle repair, medical services and schools.

Councilman Russ Blewett said the project will generate revenue for the city, but more importantly will be a job generator. “Jobs are the No. 1 need in the High Desert,” Blewett said. “This project will do so much for the area.” Blewett said many companies are leaving the San Bernardino and Los Angeles areas because of strict air quality standards or other factors. “Those businesses are a perfect fit for the High Desert,” Blewett said. “Bring the companies because we have the people.”
